Barrett C. Brown, PhDc, is a specialist in leader development and organizational transformation. For nearly two decades he has supported individuals and teams to advance through complex challenges and unlock their deeper capacities. He brings an international perspective, having lived in the USA, the Netherlands, Brazil, and Ecuador, worked in 12 countries, and traveled in over 30.
Barrett has designed and facilitated 100+ leader development programs for executives and managers from multinationals, high-growth companies, and international institutions. These range from master classes, innovation labs, and large-scale conferences to corporate universities and multi-year executive education programs. He has personally trained 500+ leaders from over 30 countries, and has logged 1400+ hours mentoring senior executives and managers.
Executives from Nike, Unilever, Nestlé, Mars, Cargill, ADM, and Sara Lee, as well as leaders from government and civil society organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, US EPA, World Wildlife Fund, Oxfam, and the Asian Social Institute have all gone through Barrett’s programs. He co-designed and currently facilitates an executive education program at Nyenrode Business Universiteit in The Netherlands, and has served as adjunct faculty or guest lecturer at seven other universities, including the Blekinge Institute of Technology (Sweden) and John F. Kennedy University (USA). Barrett is often asked to speak, and has presented widely, including to CEOs and government ministers as well as to audiences of 800+. Venues for his presentations and leadership briefings on sustainability issues include the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development (side event), US State Department, UNDP and UNESCO headquarters, International Cocoa Organization, and the Bioneers conference.
In addition to developing leaders and serving as a trusted advisor, Barrett works on complex change issues related to organizational and systems transformation. For the Sustainable Trade Initiative, he co-led development and implementation of the learning strategy for a €30M investment in eight global agro-commodity supply chains. He also co-designed a €14M cocoa sector development program that is rolling out in five countries in West Africa and Asia. He has architected and delivered organizational development and change initiatives for companies up to $250M in annual revenue in financial services, marketing, logistics, and manufacturing. Barrett has also led the annual strategic alignment process and the development of a long-term vision for two high-growth US companies and a Dutch foundation.
Barrett has long worked and volunteered in both the private and civil society sectors, having served on the leadership team or advisory board of twelve companies, NGOs, and foundations, one of which he represented at the United Nations for four years. Since 2002 he has worked with dozens of scholar-practitioners to develop an integral approach to sustainability, and he serves as Executive Director of the Integral Sustainability Center. Through Core Integral he serves as a mentor to leaders and change agents who are applying integral theory to transform organizations as well as for those working to advance global environmental and social change issues. He is an advisory board member for: Kosmos Journal, an international journal focused on societal development; the Shift Foundation, which develops emerging global leaders; and IntegralCity.com, focusing on urban sustainability issues.
As a researcher and writer, Barrett has authored or edited 40+ articles, case studies, and videos on leadership, sustainability, organizational development, and market transformation. Some of his writings are used in universities in North America and Europe as well as in the United Nations system, and have been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Farsi. He has used his fluency in Spanish and Portuguese to translate several business books and lecture on leadership.
Barrett’s undergraduate studies are in Mechanical Engineering and English Literature through the University of California at Santa Cruz. His Ph.D. and Master’s degrees are in Human and Organizational Systems from Fielding Graduate University. Barrett’s recent doctoral research explored how leaders with highly complex worldviews engage in change initiatives.
